Issue #20 will focus on Yogyakarta and the island of Java. It will coincide with the third Yogyakarta Batik Biennale. The theme will be the relationship between craft and technology, reflecting the growth of knowledge and capacity in Indonesia, which helps realise new potential in its rich craft traditions. The word for this issue is “Pembaharu”, which is a special Indonesian word for innovation.

This issue will be a space to consider broadly the new developments in craft as it adapts to a changing world. This include:

  • new materials, particularly organic compounds utilising sustainable substances such as seaweed
  • new tools, such as 3D printers that can bridge the gap between design and craft
  • new platforms for connecting craft with its audiences, such as novel ways of using Instagram or new e-commerce platforms
