For Afsaneh Modiramani, the slow nature of weaving gives meaning to an ever-expanding and alien urban environment.
Living in the busy city of Tehran inspires my textiles. Today, with the ever-increasing expansion of urban developments and technology, the balance between man and nature has been disrupted and the natural landscape has been weakened. It is a complex and unpredictable psychological and social environment. The slow nature of weaving, at a time when technology has increased the pace of life, encourages a sense of calmness and composure, leading us to connect more with ourselves and our lives.
When I walk in the city and look at my surroundings, I notice that many new buildings are under construction, and I usually photograph and design them.
My textiles are hand woven and I weave them on the loom. To weave the ideas I have, I always think about the sum and number of works. Like a view of a city that includes buildings, trees, people, animals, vehicles, etc.
Then, in accordance with the design I have in mind, I determine the suitable fibers and textile design, as well as the type of density and the number of woven pieces according to the size of my work, and then I start working.
Because the woven fabric is rolled in front of the loom, it is very exciting for me to see the whole work after finishing each piece of weaving! After finishing the weaving and putting the pieces together, I embroider designs including animals and humans.
