Sophie Moran, Batter Bowl
Sophie Moran dedicates her classic ceramic bowl to the memory of William Morris.
A good friend once asked if I would make her a large bowl with a spout and handle for baking. My mind happily wandered to the fat-rimmed, cream coloured mixing bowls cluttering the kitchens of my childhood. I set to work on a contemporary version, blending porcelain with white stoneware for durability and developing a buttery glaze. The form needed substance without being heavy and a comfortable handle that wouldn’t get bumped. This was a piece determinedly intended for use.
Batter bowls became staples of a collection I called Morris, named in honour of the much-quoted textile designer William Morris. “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful” he declared.
Many batter bowls have passed through my hands and into kitchens over time, being adopted and adapted to family rituals and domestic joys. I love hearing of their use, from baking cakes to muddling cocktails. My own have been making pancakes and memories for my family for many years now and it is my hope they will continue to do so for many more to come.
