Rare Trade Basket, 1725 | Cherokee doubleweave baskets: “The handsomest baskets I ever saw.”

The Royal Governor of South Carolina returned home to London in 1725 with this fine native-made doubleweave basket with lid. Late in the eighteenth century, the aging trader James Adair recalled that similar “Cheerake” rivercane baskets had been quite popluar with South Carolina clonists when he bought and sold Indian goods decades earlier
